Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize it as a time rich with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of joy! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room because I felt too intimidated to step out and greet others. However, sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in a little small talk with individuals in similar situations to mine. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse mix of individuals across the program and university, you are certain to meet people who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in an environment like that can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel as if you’re not measuring up. A few strategies helped me persevere through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey as you. If something doesn’t make sense, I can nearly assure you that several others share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek help from both your fellow students and the staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the student support services until the academic year was coming to a close, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make full use of the support being offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!
In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before starting and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated through the many support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has also shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
