Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my residence, just before the semester kicked off, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? It’s advantageous to make a bold move at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breakers and events are available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned to embrace my true self. With the variety of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover others like you.

A further challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel unqualified. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you that others are in the same position. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties that students encounter. They relate to our experiences and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I spoke about taking risks – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never seek too much!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by utilizing the support from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to have fun even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
