Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening components of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day staying in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet new people. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with engaging in small talk with fellow students facing similar experiences. So, what did I learn? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one aspect, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can challenge your self-confidence; you may notice others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to apply in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep in steady contact with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available to you. You can never have an excess of help!
Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently misguided and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has illustrated how to enjoy my time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
