Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is commonly one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and mingle with others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you are not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re bound to meet those who relate to you.
Another obstacle was handling the workload and the intricacies of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you are struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you others are facing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be one of the most important lessons to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They relate to us and sustain ongoing communication regarding our worries throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to bond with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My principal lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the numerous support avenues provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to have fun despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
