Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once-shy self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can be perhaps one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, daunted by the idea of stepping outside and meeting new people. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I learn? I discovered that it’s advantageous to take a gamble at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling a bit hesitant or unsure, don’t panic! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events to aid you in connecting with fellow students. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can sometimes be challenging for your self-confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel subpar. A few things supported me during that time, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are confused as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are understanding of students’ challenges and keep in constant contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I discussed taking leaps at the beginning – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role enabled me to interact with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this element of university is to make full use of the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various supportive resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun even amidst pressures like exams and submission deadlines.
