Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of initiating university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of settling into my residence, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. Yet today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both within this university and my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with a bit of casual conversation with others in comparable situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t quite prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in forming connections. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an atmosphere can take a toll on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most critical lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students face. They relate to students and provide ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely advantageous. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In summation, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
