Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving headfirst into this experience was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your major concerns. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days before term started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Sitting here today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it simply required engaging in casual conversation with those in similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that it’s crucial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the program and university, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was genuinely a significant elevation from A-levels, and, in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely desire for you to excel and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I certainly did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are typically groundless and can be eased by the plethora of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself amid the stressors like exams and deadlines.
