Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted on me, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was meeting new people. This tends to be one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a huge worry for you. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with others facing similar experiences. So, what have I gathered? I realized that taking a jump at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be endless ice-breaking events and opportunities to help you bond with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of individuals within the course and university, you’re destined to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can shake your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in similar circumstances. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled too. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to the next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students face challenges. They resonate with students and sustain continual communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. As I mentioned about taking leaps— I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
