Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what have I learned this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of stepping out and introducing myself. However, sitting here now, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with engaging in small talk with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you find yourself feeling a bit unready or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I’ve also learned that if there’s one thing to be, let it be yourself. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people like you.

Another challenge was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was clearly a significant elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always kind to your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges as you. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that a few others are grappling with it as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had reached out earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the outset; I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main insight from this aspect of university is to take advantage of the assistance being provided to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
