Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and withdrawn self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect often ranks among the most daunting when starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it may top your list of concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Conversely, today I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re not completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid in connectivity with peers. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of people across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a notable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel out of your depth. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s almost certain that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and engage in ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year about our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the staff, and this is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the numerous support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
