Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be one of your predominant worries. On my first day moving into my dormitory, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and meet others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and throughout this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s optimal to take a risk at the year’s onset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With such a wide variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those like yourself.

Another challenge was the amount of work and the difficulty of the content. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you may notice others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me during that period, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can practically assure you that there are others who also do not. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty within Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and understand the challenges that students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are many ways to get acquainted with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the abundant support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
