Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking such a significant leap was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

Among the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening dimensions of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my accommodation, mere days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with fellow students in the same boat. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist in connecting with others. Moreover, remain authentic. With such a diverse population across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a distinct transition from A-levels, and the difference was even more pronounced from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can influence your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you have difficulty with something, it’s likely others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and staff!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and grasp the challenges students face. They sympathize and maintain ongoing dialogue with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I talked about taking leaps previously – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings about university are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and how to savor my time despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
