By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my once timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of settling into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be your authentic self. With so many varied individuals in the course and university, you’re guaranteed to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was definitely an increase in rigor compared to A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was reminding myself that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Ask for guidance from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to prosper and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking bold steps earlier – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My significant insight from this area of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
