Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of fun! So, what have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you are a potential student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I remained in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Furthermore, if you can be one thing, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find peers who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-levels, with an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel underqualified in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone else is navigating the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Thus, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep communication open with us all year long. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I talked about taking chances earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your growth! My primary lesson is to seize the opportunities for assistance that are available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and while in university, are often exaggerated and can be mitigated with the help provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment in life despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
