Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what’s my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university is certainly one of the more daunting, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can confidently state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both within this university and my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, it should be to be yourself. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating through similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the support available to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
