Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar wasn’t something my former shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I confronted was forming friendships. This is often a significant source of anxiety when beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with making casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I discovered that it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few elements helped me navigate through that feeling, one being the realization that everyone shares your experiences. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you there are others who share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and instructors!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your personal growth! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support that is available. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to embrace enjoyment alongside the pressures such as exams and deadlines.
