Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This often ranks among the more frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On the day I arrived at my accommodation, a few days prior to classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, I can now sit here with confidence, knowing that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, let it be yourself. With such a vast array of diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the rigorous workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares a similar experience. If something confounds you, I can almost assure you that others share the same struggle. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps previously – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish relationships with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it is unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated through the variety of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and how to relish my time despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
