Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what valuable insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of initiating university life, and if you’re a future student, it could be among your primary concerns. On my moving-in day, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which started with a bit of casual conversation with those in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also grasped that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

An additional challenge was the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be challenging for your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most pivotal lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never overdo it!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to have fun alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
