Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re considering this as a future student, it might be one of your major concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester’s commencement, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room due to my apprehension in introducing myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking occasions and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people who share your characteristics.
Another challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and begin to feel inadequate. A few elements aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support you are being provided. You can never have too much!
In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the variety of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
