Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my dorm, just days ahead of term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can confidently affirm that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it commenced with casual conversations with people in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a step forward at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking moments and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With the diverse array of individuals across the course and campus, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are having trouble too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s genuinely one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious emotions, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated to me how to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
