Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fears, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered throughout this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This often stands as one of the most frightening components of starting university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day retreating to my room, far too scared to step outside and introduce myself to others. Nonetheless, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all begun with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what’s the lesson? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the start of the academic year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. With such a diverse range of individuals in the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the demands of coursework and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel lacking. A few strategies helped me manage that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re puzzled by something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial knowledge to acquire in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. As I noted earlier about taking risks – I embraced one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have excessive support!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the numerous support options provided by faculty and peers. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
