Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back, I can see a year rich with personal development, challenges, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a future student, it may be your greatest concern. On the day I moved into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others experiencing similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or comfortable, that’s alright! There will be plenty of ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another challenge pertained to the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being in such a context can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. What assisted me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something doesn’t click for you, it’s likely others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to peers and staff for help!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until much later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never overdo it!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety concerning university are often unfounded and can be eased by the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never alone and have learned how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
