Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Approximately ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others facing similar situations. So, what have I learned? It’s beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous social events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also understood that being true to yourself is essential. With a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can test your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me through this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing something similar. If you find yourself confused about something, I can nearly assure you that others share the same predicament. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show compassion for students and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding any concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned about embracing challenges – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous paths to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to maximize the support available. You can never receive too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the variety of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has illuminated the fact that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
