Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it could be a considerable worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I realize? I learned that it’s always advisable to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, fret not! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will arise to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be your true self. With the diverse array of individuals in the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first semester to the second. Navigating such an environment isn’t always straightforward for your confidence; witnessing others study might make you feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for help!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and consistently communicate throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the help available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
