Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I see a journey rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be your greatest worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too apprehensive to venture out and greet anyone. Sitting here now, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in some casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. There is a vast array of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter others like yourself.

An additional obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and question your own abilities. A few key thoughts helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same difficulties as you. If you don’t grasp something, I can virtually assure you that several others are also puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They desire for you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They are empathetic and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, yet I wish I had sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being provided. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased by the plethora of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment amidst sources of stress like exams and deadlines.
