Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding my future as I embarked on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what lessons have I gathered, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most formidable hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently the most daunting element of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it may be your greatest worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, I remained in my room for the entire day, too daunted to interact with others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting with casual conversations with fellow students in comparable positions. I realized that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities available to assist you in connecting with others. Be authentic, and you’ll encounter individuals who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first to the second term. This environment can test your self-esteem; you might feel less capable than others. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If you find something confusing, chances are, others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is the most critical lesson to learn in your first year. Look for support from fellow students and faculty!
The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep communication flowing with us throughout the year. I didn’t seek pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for the year, which allowed me to connect with faculty, a priceless experience. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. Make the most of the support provided; you can never receive too much!
This year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often baseless and can be eased by the assistance available from staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
