By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! What insights did this year offer, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This part of beginning university can be quite daunting, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a major worry. On my initial day of moving into housing, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Today, I’m pleased to say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at this university and in my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. What did I realize? It’s important to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if you can embrace one thing, be authentic. With such a varied group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover individuals who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can test your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others don’t either. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most important lesson from the first year. Reach out to classmates and instructors!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the challenges students encounter. They relate and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I made one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main conclusion is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support options that staff and fellow students provide. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
