Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was accustomed to. Reflecting upon the year, I recognize it as one filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodations, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of stepping out to meet new people. However, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely required striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I realized? I’ve grasped that it’s always advisable to take risks at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking occasions and events designed to facilitate your connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody one quality, just be yourself. There is a diverse array of people throughout the course and university; you’re likely to discover those who resonate with you.

An additional hurdle was managing the workload and the level of difficulty of the content. There was indeed a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for one’s confidence; observing others study may lead you to feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something puzzling, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also find it confusing. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The instructors in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards us and keep in consistent touch throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I did embark on one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. Numerous avenues exist to connect with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support that is available to you. You can never have an excess of it!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in the run-up to and during university, are nearly always irrational and can be mitigated through the numerous support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to relish my time despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
