By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. As I reflect on the past year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all through engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

A further challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a marked increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; witnessing others study might leave you feeling inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are in the same boat. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Seek support from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties.
