Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I got ready to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging in a new experience was not typical for my previously shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I realize that this year has been abundant in personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! What insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

A significant and intimidating hurdle was making new friends. This can be quite daunting when entering university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a prominent worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, right before the term began, I spent the entire day in my room, too frightened to go out and socialize. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with light conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I learn? It’s essential to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, that’s fine! There are numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, if you can be one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the demands of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant one from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you may feel somewhat inadequate in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is confronting the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, chances are others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson from my first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the hardships students encounter. They show empathy and keep in touch with us regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. As I mentioned, I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own growth! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has made me realize that anxious feelings about university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned I’m never truly alone and how to have fun despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
