By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a potential student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to others. Today, though, I can affirm I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was sparking small conversations with people in comparable circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? I’ve learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a wide range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who share your interests.

Another difficulty was the increased workload and complexity of the content. There was undeniably a significant jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things helped me through those sensations, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something confounds you, I can nearly guarantee there are others who are also struggling. So, ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely want you to prosper and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and it is unquestionably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re offered. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
