Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of commencing university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your greatest concern. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, stemming from engaging in casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what have I discovered? Embracing a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you’re not yet prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the challenge of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can disrupt your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you are puzzled by a concept, likely, others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson learned in the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students frequently encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to get acquainted with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully embrace the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness about university are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support provided by both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
