Around ten months ago, back in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Engaging in something new was quite uncommon for my previously reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year that was brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was the task of making new friends. This can be one of the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant concern. On my very first day moving into my accommodations, I spent the entire day concealing myself in my room, far too shy to venture out and socialize. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some incredible friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others experiencing similar feelings. What did I come to understand? It’s crucial to take that initial plunge at the start of the year. If you’re not yet ready or feel uncomfortable, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking activities and events exist to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that embracing your true self is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re destined to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a highly driven environment can weigh heavily on your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. What proved beneficial for me was reminding myself that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find something perplexing, chances are others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty within the Materials department is remarkable. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep communication open regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps – I took a significant one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to form connections with staff members, which is truly invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s among the most beneficial actions you can undertake for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully embrace the support available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness about university are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the support accessible from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
