Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the most significant and intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be a considerable worry for you. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Nowadays, though, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is always a wise choice. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find peers who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the level of workload and difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally lost. So, seek assistance. This could be the single most essential lesson to absorb in your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students experience difficulties. They understand our challenges and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the abundant support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
