By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles faced, and joyful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

A primary and quite intimidating hurdle was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, before classes began, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to go out and meet anyone. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I glean? It’s beneficial to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There are plenty of ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to discover like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can challenge your confidence; you might feel inadequate compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone shares similar experiences. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are feeling the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is essential during your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and consistently communicate with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took an initiative at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main message is to leverage the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
