Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Leaping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. In hindsight, this year has been one of personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the initial daunting hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often regarded as one of the most intimidating parts of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day settling into my accommodation, right before the term commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, simply by striking up casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what’s the lesson here? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events aimed at helping you connect with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked increase compared to A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second semester. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and begin to feel inferior. What reassured me was keeping in mind that everyone shares the same challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s almost a certainty that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from both classmates and staff!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They are genuinely invested in your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and ensure ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which has proven to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the opportunities for help that are available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has demonstrated that anxious feelings regarding university are often baseless and can be eased through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment, even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
