Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking a plunge into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is definitely one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day locked in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a wide variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to discover people like you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel as though you don’t measure up. A few strategies helped me cope with that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation as you. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a few others who are also confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the academic year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to leverage the support you’re being offered. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I’m never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
