Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be a major concern for you. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to help you engage with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a diverse range of people in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the challenges of the content. There was undoubtedly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to establish relationships with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of help!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
