Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t precisely the type of thing my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I now recognize an academic year filled with personal growth, various challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself today?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your biggest concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted by the thought of stepping out to greet others. Sitting here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I have found a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events await to help you interact with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and the university, you’re bound to find like-minded people.

Another challenge I faced was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on one’s confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. There were a few strategies that helped me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that several others share the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I initially mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with staff members, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to maximize the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are generally unfounded and can be alleviated with the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has guided me on how to find joy amid sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
