Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it might be what concerns you the most. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Today, however, I can proudly claim to have formed some of the best friendships of my life, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with initiating small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gather? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-level studies, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from classmates and faculty alike!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re provided. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to savor my experience alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
