Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a novice student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodations, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the full day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve developed some incredible friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that making that initial leap at the year’s beginning is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and the university, you are destined to find like-minded peers.

A further challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost guarantee others share the same predicament. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are eager for you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and sustain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the available support. You can’t have too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
