Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and withdrawn self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a primary worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what have I gleaned? It’s best to take a risk at the onset of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. Furthermore, if you can embody one quality, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can unsettle your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are equally puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson in the initial year. Reach out for help from both peers and staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your wellbeing! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never receive too much!
In sum, this year has illustrated that feelings of nervousness about university are often misplaced and can be mitigated with the support that staff and fellow students offer. It has demonstrated to me that I am never isolated and shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
