Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into something unfamiliar was not typical for my previously reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? It’s essential to make an effort at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is crucial. With such a diverse group of people at the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If something is unclear to you, chances are, others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show compassion and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t completely take advantage of the pastoral support until the close of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the outset, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be softened with the help accessible from both the staff and fellow students. It’s revealed to me that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
