Twelve months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was far from what my previously reserved and timid self was used to. Looking back, I recognize an academic year overflowing with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year granted me, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of initiating university life, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it could be among your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the entire day staying in my room, too hesitant to venture out and introduce myself. Sitting here today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, within this university and this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with others in comparable circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that taking a risk at the start of the year is always the best approach. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some instances, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you’re struggling with, I can almost assure you there are others who do too. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned before about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the available support. You can never have excessive help!

On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be eased through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
