Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into such unfamiliar territory was not what my previously timid and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others in the same boat. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to foster connections. I also discovered that above all, you should be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant shift from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying intensely and feel out of your depth. A couple of things helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is grappling with similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee others are equally perplexed. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are wonderful. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the hurdles that students encounter. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are many avenues to cultivate relationships with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this area of university life is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the various support systems that staff and fellow students provide. It has taught me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
