Just ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can frequently be one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a potential student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I have made some of the finest friends here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the challenging content. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can impact your confidence; you might feel less capable in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same path. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential skill to hone in your first year. Reach out to classmates and instructors!
Speaking of instructors, the Materials department is exceptional. They want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties that students encounter. They show empathy and keep a steady line of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took a significant one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to engage with faculty, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the resources available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I am never alone and how to have fun even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
