Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was far from what my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period abundant in personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year unveil, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting components of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, mere days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I have formed some lasting friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step at the onset of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t sweat it! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with fellow students. I also learned that staying true to yourself is vital. With such a variety of individuals within the program and university, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with you.

An additional obstacle was the intensity of the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct transition from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in that environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others pouring over their studies and feel out of place. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others are too. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open communication about any concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. I spoke of taking risks – I stepped up by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to engage with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It taught me that I am never solitary and how to have fun despite pressure from exams and deadlines.
