Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey of academic advancement, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often the most frightening part of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, daunted by the idea of venturing out and introducing myself to others. Sitting here now, I can assuredly state that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What have I realized? It’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker activities to aid you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of content. There was unquestionably a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the initial term to the subsequent one. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel lesser. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and ensure ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to capitalize on the support that’s available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to relish my time despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
