Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Looking back ten months to October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was gearing up to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Now, upon reflection, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

A significant and intimidating challenge I faced was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university is undoubtedly one of the most daunting, and if you’re reading this as someone considering enrollment, it may be among your foremost worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. However, I can now assert with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I absorb? I found that taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, take heart! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to help you bond with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was indeed notable, and there was an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being thrown into such a rigorous environment can severely affect one’s confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle with something, rest assured that many others do too. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson I learned in my first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build connections with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s undeniably one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support systems provided by faculty and peers. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to enjoy my journey despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
