Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging in something unfamiliar wasn’t characteristic of my previously timid and introverted nature. Looking back at the past academic year, I perceive a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! However, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles I faced was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I gain from this? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t worry! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge revolved around the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors helped me navigate through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are others who also find it perplexing. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to glean in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the difficulties faced by students. They empathize with our situations and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking chances previously – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role facilitated my connection with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are abundant opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
